My name is Junior, and this is my opioid story.

I am a recovering heroin addict. I tried to end my own life by overdosing on heroin because I was tired of the lifestyle I was living and the ways it affected my family. After my overdose, I was in a coma for quite a while, and I had a brain injury from it. After I got out of the hospital, I was sentenced to serve the next 21 or 22 months in prison.

I do not consider time behind bars part of my clean time. I start the day I was released as my first clean day. I cannot remember how many years I will have been clean this year, maybe four, five, or six. I’m doing it for myself to prove that once you put your heart and soul into recovery, you will succeed.
